Right to Work

Georgia is a right-to-work state, and you have the right to decide whether or not you want to join and financially support the Teamsters if the union is elected.

Right-to-Work laws secure the right of employees to decide for themselves whether or not they want to join or financially support a union. Only certain states are right-to-work states, whereas others are still forced unionism states where Union Security clauses are lawful.

So, why should you even care if a union is voted in? Well, if a union gets in, even if you never signed and never voted for a union, you are still represented by a union and are therefore bound to any contract a union negotiates.

However, you cannot be legally required to join or financially support a union by paying union dues.

  • It's important to note that a union may still ask or bargain for non-members to pay "agency fees" because non-members are still fully covered by the collective bargaining agreement.

  • The Union will negotiate all of your wages, benefits and other terms and conditions of employment and you will be covered by that deal whether you like it or not and whether you join the union or not. And, remember, in bargaining, things can get better, they can stay the same, or they can get worse.

  • Also, once a union is voted in, employees would lose their ability to deal one-on-one with management over conditions of employment. The grievance procedure is the method for dealing with disputes or settling issues in a union environment. Moreover, it is usually up to the union steward to process grievances and deal with management about your concerns. Again, this is true whether you join the union or not. In that regard, ask yourself "will the union steward truly represent employees' interests and fight for them if they are not dues paying members of the union?" What do you think?

We think the answer is clear. Remember, the Union is in this for the money, so they are willing to say anything to get you to sign up.
